Polar Bear Play

We really enjoyed spending March learning about polar bears.  We did all sorts of neat activities and experiments.

We learned about the polar bear life cycle.  We practiced it on the Smartboard and then acted it out (newborn, baby, cub, young adult, adult).

We learned about foods that polar bears like to eat.  Next, we pretended we were polar bears finding food for our babies.

We measured out the length of a real-life-sized polar bear (2.5 m - 3m tall on hind legs).  We also measured ourselves against it

Science experiment: the kids held their hands in the snow for as long as they could.

 

Then we used a bag (within a bag) of lard to protect our hand from the cold.  This simulates the layer of fat beneath a polar bear's skin.  

Actually touching the lard - "It feels like lotion!"
