Hatching Chicks

Did you know we are hatching chicks in kindergarten? We bought some eggs from Morning Sound Farm and placed them in an incubator for three weeks. We used a process called ’candling’ to look inside the egg and watch as the babies developed. Late last week, these little sweeties popped out! We look forward to playing with the chicks for a week before taking them back to the farm. Here is a picture of an egg being candled and a video of our first chicks shortly after hatching: 

Caterpillars to Butterflies

Our caterpillars arrived and we each got to pick one to call our very own. We’ve named them and are busy watching them grow and change. Some of them are in their chrysalis and some are already butterflies. 

The names the kids chose were ADORABLE! Here they are:

We learned all about the butterfly life cycle. We looked at pictures and props before acting out the stages. Did you know a caterpillar pops its head and skin off as it gets too big for it?! It sheds its head and skin five times before building its chrysalis. Another interesting fact: a butterfly isn’t just a caterpillar with wings. When it enters its chrysalis, it breaks down into black goo, a pile of cells which rebuilds itself into a whole new creature, the butterfly. 

 

We are eggs that have been laid on a leaf.
We are the size of the period at the end of this sentence. 

We’ve come out of our eggs and we are little caterpillars who spend our days
eating, pooping(!), and resting. We also pop our heads off as we outgrow them. 

We are spinning our silk chrysalises as we dangle under a leaf. We break down into black goo before rebuilding ourselves as butterflies. 

We emerge and pump coloured ink into our wings and wait for
them to dry before we can fly.

We stand on a flower and taste with our feet! Then we unroll our proboscis and slurp up the nectar like we are drinking through a straw. 

Then we lay new eggs and the life cycle starts over again. 

We love to observe and play with our caterpillars. They are getting long and fat.

Bake Sale

Last week we hosted our hugely successful bake sale to raise money for our KinderGARDEN planting supplies. Thanks to all of our families who donated baking and sent money with their kids, we made $500! We are so excited that we far exceeded our goals.

Our Grade 5 Reading Buddies helped us present our posters in each classroom to advertise our sale
